10 Stories of Single Mothers - Who We Are

The 10 Stories of Single Mothers project is a collaboration between a number of groups, united by a shared concern about the impact the reduced level of government support is having on single mothers and their children.

Through the stories of these 10 women we hope to illuminate the terrible consequences these financials cuts can have on an entire family – a family that is often already struggling financially. We also hope this project will help dispel some of the myths and stigma that unfortunately still surround single mums – as you will seen from our stories these women are hard-working and courageous individuals, battling to try and create a better future for their kids.

The National Council Of Single Mothers & Their Children

The National Council of Single Mothers and their Children Incorporated (NCSMC) has been an organisation for single mothers since its conception in the early 1970`s. NCSMC believes that having access to information and support when and as required is empowering, it enables women to make informed decisions, and better equips them to protect and support themselves and their child (ren). NCSMC gives primacy to mothers living in hardship.

Sydney Community Foundation

The Sydney Community Foundation (SCF) is an independent public structure that pools and distributes donations in order to make a real difference to the community. The Sydney Women’s Fund (SWF) is a sub fund of the SCF, and is comprised of a group of engaged, strategic donors investing in women to create lasting change. The mission of the SWF is to foster a powerful wave of philanthropy that improves the lives of women and girls in Sydney, focusing on creating change by funding at a grassroots level.

As well as driving the 10 Stories of Single Mothers project, the SWF has set up structure whereby donors can donate specifically to projects that assist single mothers and their children.

The Snow Foundation

The Snow Foundation is the creation of brothers Terry and George Snow who established the foundation in 1991 to benefit the disadvantaged community in Canberra and beyond. Terry has a pretty straightforward view, see someone struggling and you give them a helping hand. The Snow Foundation has reached out to help more than 200 different organisations and individuals, providing more than $6m in funding. The Snow Foundation generously provided support for the 10 Stories of Single Mothers project.
